AND THOU SHALT HONOR
The Caregiver’s Companion
Advice and Inspiration to Help You Care
For Your Aging Parents and Loved Ones
Edited by Beth Witrogen McLeod
Pulitzer Prize-Nominated Author of Caregiving: The Spiritual Journey of Love, Loss and Renewal
Foreword by Rosalynn Carter
Chances are either you or someone you know is a caregiver. With an estimated 30 million men and women currently providing care for an elderly, disabled or terminally ill loved one it’s an issue that affects us all. Caregiving can be emotionally, physically and financially draining. AND THOU SHALT HONOR: The Caregiver’s Companion (Rodale/October 2002) shows caregivers they are not alone and provides an invaluable resource into the services and people available to help them. It is filled with essential information to make the job of caregiving a bit easier for all involved. It covers the issues that matter most, from assessing a loved one’s health to legal advice and benefits assistance, including:
- More than 60 action plans with explicit instructions for navigating each caregiving task, from handling family disputes about care and redefining your family role to changing bed sheets and watching for drug reactions.
- Checklists to assess the need for care.
- A list of the 100 most useful telephone numbers for caregiving
- A thorough up-to-date resource section listing the best organizations, publications and websites for additional information or assistance. Services that are free or low-cost are highlighted.
- How-to illustrations for hands-on care.
- A special section on the all-important care for the caregiver to prevent burnout and help them deal with the many emotional issues they will face.
- Sidebars on “What You Need to Know” highlight key points in each chapter for easy reference.
“Point of View” sidebars share caregiving experiences from real life people.
AND THOU SHALT HONOR is filled with practical solutions to real-world caregiving concerns but it also goes beyond that providing readers with a welcome sense of community with others who are caregivers whether by choice or necessity. It will help caregivers feel less isolated as they take part in a universal experience that cuts across all cultures, ethnic groups and economic situations. AND THOU SHALT HONOR will give them the tools and resources that empower them to truly embrace the caregiving role.
